This is really the answer. If you are not more fit than the other runners, then they will catch you if you try to pick up the pace from way out. The best strategy is measuring your energy to have a lot left ont the final straight. You can still take the pace out hard far from the finish, just have something left to compete with. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVZ7iUemN84 El G hammered the last 800 in 2004 but he still reserved enough to hold off Lagat on the home straight.
