I was working for the USGS and not Google, Apple, FB, etc. so I wasn't exactly making Silicon Valley money but ended up finding a place in someone's house for $700 with a shared bathroom and no kitchen. Worked well for me as everything else was stupidly expensive. I'd try to stay in Menlo/Palo Alto-I'd avoid Redwood City and especially East Palo Alto (unless you like gang violence).
