Statistically, the Japanese are 3rd in the marathon, but with out a doubt, America would have a lot more 2:10 marathoners if more of our top track guys focuses on it. I am pretty sure Rupp, Solinski and few others could run a 2:10 marathon on a fast course if trained for it.
Also, only a few Americans run London, Berlin, Rotterdam, Tokayo and lake Lake Biwa, etc., were you run fast times. Off the top of my head, no Japanese male made the WC finals in any track or even a field event...not good by any standard.
