My father retired at 48. He was offered a "package" at a company where he was an executive and he took it. He expected to find another job, but then decided not to go through with the job search.

He now partners a venture capital firm with a few guys, but it doesn't take up too much of his time. He plays a lot of tennis. He runs. This was about 10 years ago, so it isn't so novel anymore...
