No way. Cycling has way more variables. Can a 4 hour running race "deliver" a sprinter to a world championship?
You can have guys that seem to be the fittest based on power and flat out ability to hammer who can't even ride up a mountain. See Cancellara.

The guys they call sprinters in road cycling are probably more like our mid distance guys that have a really good kick. There are no Usain Bolts being "delivered" to the end of a long road race....maybe some David Rudishas or Asbel Kiprops.

If you want to look for true sprinters in cycling, look to the track (just like in running) :)

There is no way that a cyclist can ride a 4-5 hour race then sprint to the win if he does not have a huge aerobic engine. The difference between cycling's sprinters and cycling's climbers, or time trial specialists is about as big as the difference between a world class 1500 guy and a world class 10k guy (if that).

Cycling will give you a great aerobic workout, but as said above, you will need to do things to stimulate your muscles to work through a wider range of motion and joint angles.

Can you add drills and our other general fitness activities on the grass?
