Ten years ago, there were more opportunities to compete at 10000m, and even 5000m. Now, if you're a 13:00 or 26:50 man, even a 19 year old, why waste your time if you're not winning medals? You could run 13:00 for 200€ or you could take that speed to the marathon and take a shot at winning $250,000 like Abshero did today. Or even $25,000 at a lower level marathon.
