The fact that other people can run a quick half marathon doesn't mean that the top marathon or 10k contenders might not still opt for the half instead. Rather than adding a half marathon, I'd rather just see the Olympics adopt an automatic standard, such as 2:06 or so, such that if you can break the time, you're automatically invited, regardless of how many other people your country is sending.


I like the idea about an auto standard but I don't think it has to be one or the other. I would like to see both implemented. The runners are still going to run the race they think gives them the best shot of winning. It won't hurt the competitiveness any.
