I 100% disagree. The percentage of high visibility star athletes transferring to a new college/university is miniscule. Personally, I hate moving. Packing up, leaving friends, favorite places, and moving to a strange place is difficult at best. When these kinds of moves occur, I have to believe that a lot of thought (soul searching) went into these decisions.

I feel these things are reminiscent to a employee leaving for another job. You hate to see a star employee leave, but you're not going to sabotage their next job and their ability to make a living.

If I was a track/cross country coach at a D1 school, I wouldn't interfere with these rare moves. If they're not happy, go somewhere else. And if a received a transfer, I would hope that he/she would be immediately released to run for me.

Bottom line, a coach that refuses to release an athlete looks like a sore loser.
