Interest Ed, along with all the good advice given to you, one thing not mentioned was non-running training activities. I'm not the best source to recommend this, because I'm pretty much 3k and up, but if the 400m is seriously in your range of interest, as a long sprint event, my understanding is that you should consider doing some amount of weight training. Something to think about, at any rate.
And after reading the article that MikeF sent, maybe it's something we should all think about. That and working on our flexibility.
