But for the Boston Marathon, one would think the results are printed somewhere. Even if it is a newspaper, surely it can be scanned.

I've always found it frustrating how difficult it is to get race results online in a standard format - to make it easier to aggregate and analyze. Sites like athlinks.com seem to have the right idea, but the results are incomplete or incorrect.
Doing some side projects I've found the major marathons have AWFUL sites for getting the complete listing of results. Most are designed to list maybe the top 50 and then on an individual search basis. As for the Boston results, sorry I can't help you there. I have 2001-2010 in .csv format, but that's all baa.org offers.
