No, wrong assessment. The person I was replying to was using medals as a measure of something and many other measures could be used as well. Medals are top-3, but why not top-1 or top-5. In fact, rarely do we look at the Top-3 of something unless it has this one particular variant. Thus, if you use other, essentially similar/same measures, finishing fourth by 0.03 is not a "Coulda Shoulda Woulda" case, but a measure useful in itself. Of course, any time that you use a lower 'order statistic' for a measurement, the number in that class will be larger, so your standard ratchets up a little. However, it does not ratchet up as fast as going from 0 to 1. But of course, you reallly knew that and you know all about order statistics because this is a statistical sport, right?
