Deep Scaling. Sounds worse than it really is. They'll numb you and then proceed to scrape the hardened plaque from under your gum line. The build-up there over time creates a hard calculus that can irritate the gums causing them to recede and promote infection. Typically they'll do you in quadrants (two at a time), so you'll go in twice. You may have some bleeding and soreness, but some warm salt water rinses and a few days clear things up. After that, floss well and use a Sonicare! Sonicare....get one.
