Sports Hernia Update
I'm about 4 months out of mesh surgery with Dr. Jeff Hoadley and I finally started playing soccer again this week. It was only a pick-up game and I was pretty tentative out there. But I don't seem to be having any serious problems other than the fact that my knees are aching and I have a pretty bad hamstring. I still have some mild inflammation in my groin which is a concern, but otherwise I can jog and run without any pain as long as my knees will take it. I think if I can get past these other dysfunctions, everything will be ok.
So, I think there are some lessons to be learned... recognize the signs right away and get a diagnosis. The longer you wait to deal with it -- surgery or not -- the more dysfunctions that will result because of it. Also, for those of you hearing 4-6 week recovery times, that is not going to happen for the majority of us. If it does, you are lucky. Many of us here have been on the sidelines for months and years. Those timelines are for pro athletes -- so if your doctor is telling you that you will be back to normal in a month, you need to keep in mind that the bar is set by pro players who have nothing to do all day except train and get massages.
good luck everyone!
