When running slower, we are not only taking more strides to cover the distance, we often have a harder foot strike. When running on roads and even sidewalks, as most city dwellers have to do. The extra and harder contact to the concrete does "hurt" you a little more. Likewise running too fast puts the extra strain on the heart. Therefore we need to find a balance between the two, which boils down to running comfortably. To some this is 6:00 to others 9:00.

In the same manner not every easy/reco day is the same pace. One day 7;15 may be comfortable, when the next day it most definately is not. The almighty clock should not be the judge of our pace, but rather our feel.
