I think it's possible to run a decent low-mileage marathon if you have a good lifetime aerobic base built up and follow a schedule similar to the 2:48 poster above (only quality and long runs). I remember reading a Canova post where he said that elite marathoners nowadays can do more quality work and less mileage than past elites because they've reached the point where they get very little additional physiological development from simply doing easy runs and only do them in order to recover from their harder efforts. Obviously most of the people running 40 mpw for their buildup don't have the same aerobic development to fall back on though, so they'll flame out pretty hard.
