I don't really bother with road races anymore unless I expect to win decent prize money that will more than offset the cost of the entry + travel. I still train my butt off because I enjoy it, but I'm seeing less and less reason to participate in events that cater primarily to charity runners. Many of the road races in my area have gotten rid of or reduced prize money over the last 10 years as well, even as the local talent pool has dramatically improved.
The trail races in my area are even more expensive than a lot of the road races ($50-60 for 8-12 km races), which is ridiculous seeing as how their costs to run these races are much lower than road events.
