I went to school for Digital Audio Engineering and have a degree in it. Get yourself a Mac. I just bought a new MacBook Pro for $1400 and I've got Windows 7 running as a virtual machine as stated by a user above. Rarely use Windoze as I've grown accustomed to Macs outperforming PCs in pretty much everything. The Mac I had before this lasted me just over 6 years and now my girlfriend is using it for web browsing; still runs like new.
As for being relegated to Mac-only software, there's no such thing anymore. Most major software is made cross-platform. Any legitimate digital workstations are going to be best suited for Mac. Look on Craigslist for used laptops if you're tight on cash.
