I know some people who run for them who aren't that fast. Check their XC results
Maybe you can see if you can work your ass off the summer before XC season and treat the season opener in September like you're peaking for the state meet. You might have no gas in the tank by late Oct but you'll probably make the team. Plus you might not be top7 anyway so might as well peak early in the season. Then you can lie about your HS track times and bust your ass in the 5k in indoors and outdoors, or at least train with team maybe not race. Coaches do like people who bust their ass off
