|Subject: ||RE: Being the slowest runner on your team... anyone have any stories?|
I made the roster on a D1 xc team as a walk on. I was terribly under trained and struggled to hold up to the mileage and intensity of the workouts. There was only one race in xc where I didn't come in last on the team, and I came in second to last. The guys on the team didn't rip me or exclude me or anything but I felt like a complete loser because I was nowhere near the class of any of the other top guys. It was really discouraging but I made sure to train consistently and get my mileage up over the winter. Going into the spring track season we had a try out for the team... I ended up being right on the cut off line of making the distance squad. I told the coach I'm not going to take the spot on the roster for a sprinter or jumper or thrower who really earned his way onto the team but I still practiced with all the other guys each day of the week. I was in much better shape now and I could hang in there in the workouts and regular days without any problems. Since I wasn't technically on the roster but still working with all the kids who were, I felt a lot less pressure to have to prove myself each time. Come April that spring season I was running 5K road races each week while the team was away at meets. I dropped significant time each week and ended up running the last two meets against other kids on the team on the track. By the last meet I had dropped exactly one minute off my 5K pr and finished with what would've been the third fastest 5K time of any of the roster guys in that season. I think that garnered me much more respect from the kids on the team.... that was probably also one of the most fun semesters I've ever had in college for reasons outside of track and racing
