I'd say his 800 is more than very respectable, he made the OT finals in '92 while still in college. He was a 1500 guy after that year. In HS he was actually a sprinter (and won a state TJ title), progressing, if I remember right, to the 400h early at Northeastern and then the 800.
Post-NU he signed with New Balance and was known for his all black uni and shoes, sharing Johnny Cash's Man in Black nickname for a while.
His 4th in the '96 OT was the fourth year in a row he made the finals at USATF 1500, plus the 800 in '92. A pretty good run of years for anyone.
His medal was at World Indoors, a pretty big difference from outdoors, although El Guerrouj was the winner, so it was pretty legit.
He was coached by Mark Lech, who also guided Riley Masters under 4:00 at UMaine. Mark Lech has coached 2 of Maine's 4 sub-4 milers.
