You don't get it. The question was has anyone ever broken 4 in a 1600m race. The race was lined up on a 400 meter track and they ran 4 laps, no more, no less. It should be pretty obvious but you are missing it. The answer is yes, Alan Webb broke 4 in a 1600 race running 3:59.86. Obviously he split faster when he ran his 3:53 mile but that is not the 1600 record because that was not run in a 1600m race.
Do you understand? It is not that complicated.
