The point you have missed is the general public watches Notre Dame and that is why they are on. TV execs are very good at what they do, if there was a legit audience outside of the couple thousand of us diehards than they'd show it live.
I don't know the exacts on the sponsor rights deals but I have done work soliciting them and I would imagine that buying into just the Trials would not be money well spent with the full marathon the next day and full coverage. They undoubtedly cross promoted the two.
To combat message board spam (by non runners). We are making people answer a brief question before they can post on a thread that is over 20 days old.
