Could be Alene Emere again - last time he was Amara Leta - now Alene Reta. July 08, 2005 Running under false name, Alene Emere is disqualified from Peachtree by David Monti (c) 2005 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved, used with permission (07-Jul) At the conclusion of last Monday's Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, Georgia, there was an unfamiliar name high up in the results: Amara Leta. Leta, listed as a 24-year-old from Ethiopia, finished sixth in 28:43, earning $1,500. Two days later, an anonymous posting on the LetsRun.com message board identifed Leta as Alene Emere, the Ethiopian who had run for a Japanese corporate team until he was suspended for a doping infraction late in 2001, the same year he finished second at Peachtree. Simultaneously, the mysterious Leta was identified to RRW via e-mail by U.S. agent, Hussein Makke, as a Sudanese athlete. The athlete, whom Makke did not represent, was coming to Makke's West Chester, Pennsylvania, office for a meeting. At that meeting, Makke asked him to produce his passport, but the athlete was reluctant to do so, claiming it was missing. Makke's assistant, Kim Saddic, told Makke that she recognized Leta as Emere. He finally turned over his passport, and Makke confirmed Saddic's observation. Makke called Liz Unislawski at the Atlanta Track Club, organizers of the Peachtree Race, to let her know of his discovery. The A.T.C. had previously decided not to invite Emere to the event, and he apparantly came to Atlanta at his own expense, supplied a different name, and entered the race clandestinely. Upon getting the news that Amere had misrepresented himself, the A.T.C. disqualified him. "We have DQed him from our race and asked his prize money be returned," said Unislawski in an e-mail to RRW. "The results will be adjusted." Before being suspended, Emere had a very strong year in 2001. He won the Japanese national championships at both 5,000m and 10,000m (foreign runners representing Japanese corporate teams are allowed to compete), running 13:26.33 and 27:29.53, respectively. On the U.S. road circuit, he was second at Peachtree, third at the Utica Boilermaker, and first at the Crazy 8's 8K. He is scheduled to run at Crazy 8's on 16-Jul according to a press release recently sent by the event. |

Interesting that he's the only runner in the results without an age listed. Latimer's got to be right. |

The race director should demand to see his passport and maybe even a Homeland Security Work Authorization card before handing over the prize money. |

Emere is number 2 in this picture the pic you guys got is just some random runner. Emere is a top 15 level finisher at the World XC Championships a sub 13:00 5000m runner for ETH. The guy you got ran what 40:+ for 8 miles Emere would not be wasting his time at a meet like that. |

Something isn't right here. To resolve it he should produce a passport to collect his check. The check has not been sent out yet from what I heard. |

looks like exactly the same guy to me... |

It's not an 8 mile race and his time wasn't 40:xx. He ran 48:xx for 10 miles. He beat Aish who I believe ran 13:20ish years ago. Judging by those pictures, that guy is a dead ringer. The matching watches solidifies the case (even the strap is hanging down exactly the same). |

Bump. Anyone acting on this? Someone who ran the race or knows the organizers should probably talk to them about this. No one likes seeing a drug cheat win money. |

That is Emere in the picture from the recent race or at least it's the same guy I saw in the pictures from Peachtree. |

Children, Why does it matter if it is Alene Emere or Alene Reta? Whover won the race I assume ran the same course as Aish and others, and started at the same time. The only difference was that he finished seconds ahead of his competitors, winning. Alene Emere served his drug suspension and is free to compete again. Actually, the only "real" issue here is whether he was granted a Professional Athlete Visa in order to enter the United States. This would allow him to compete here and win prize money. He can run under any name he likes, just like the friggin' HS kids who often run under different names or the names of the runners they worship! It was different in the case of Peachtree, because the organizers felt they were deceived in order to get late/complimentary elite entry (when regular entry was closed). Actually, their reaction was pretty severe and has started a backlash (at least among Letsrun posters) against a guy who is free to run again after serving his time. |

As a race director, I'll let him compete after he pays his entry fee. And he can he eligible for prize money after he shows me his P1 Visa in his passport. |

Exactly, you are one of the logical ones! Actually, I am surprised the P1 Visa issue has not been at the forefront of the Emere story. |

Idiot, Once a drug cheat, always a drug cheat. That's why it matters. |
