Seriously, why would anybody on earth want to leave Stanford and go anywhere? ( other than for money? ) Coudld the budget be getting cut? Is Floreal taking some of the money that went to distance and spending it on jumps and sprints and pissing off the XC coaches? This makes no sense. George freaking Mason, Dena and her kids...hello baby sitter? What gives on this one.

obviously....not. obviously pete julian wasn't allowed to train as part of the group, obviously jamey hairass wasn't able to be part of the training group (funny, jamey's best year(s) were under JJ and w/ the FT), obviously chris graff would never be allowed to do workouts with the guys again, gilmore, etc.....obviously.

That's true but they were looking for a new training/coaching situation anyway,....... (Obviously they can't run for the Nike led Farm Team.)

Stember getting the job Gerard left is not the craziest thing in the world.

Not the craziest, but close. If Stanford hands over the reigns to one of the most attractive coaching positions in the country, one that will attract some of the best proven young coaches around, to a guy simply because he's a fast alum, then all logic is thrown out the window.

I guess Erica McLain winning the USATF Championship in the triple jump after placing 2nd at the NCAA Indoor meet and 3rd outdoors doesn't constitute success...

This is strange because the AD at Mason ran out Norm Gordon and John Cook. He didn't seem to be interested in having national calliber track teams.
Maybe there is a new AD there now.
I have no idea.

Why worried???? When Gerard was at a CAA school, they were never a conference favorite. Maybe because he doesn't give a crap about track. Mason's XC team will improve under Gerard (but they suck, so what will that mean?), Their track team will not reach the level they have reached in the past... IC4A and NCAA elites.

Norm Gordon got screwed. He stood up for his athletes and ended up taking the fall for a bad mistake his athletes made. The AD and his douchebags had it out for Norm, so it was a no win situation. (The same administrators are there now, so good luck Gerard) Norm was possibly the best coach in the NCAA. Not many others can claim NCAA champs in the 10K and the Heptathlon. He coached and cared about all events, which is why they won all the CAA track meets while he was there, and most ECAC titles too. George Mason's loss. John Cook was the opposite of Norm. He was and still is a lieing cheating asshole.

You are dead right on that. I once had an email exchange with Stember where I mentioned how us Stanford old-timers used to go out on fifteen mile runs sometimes. He was all like, "Fifteen miles? Forget about that. That's really far!" And this was from an Olympic 1500 meter runner (who still wanted to train like an 800 runner). He's also not very popular among his peers -- he was Captain of the Stanford track team cuz Vinny put him there (or so I've been told.) And his hotdogging on the finishing straight with Alan Webb last year was pitiful. He would be a disastrous choice -- which doesn't matter, because he won't be.
