Honestly I am so disappointed in my time and want to improve. What would be the 1k swim equivalent of a 6:00 in the pool?

Hahahahha, probably 1:20 per 100m. I dunno, I can run sub 6min no problem and swim 1km in 14:xx no problem.

Dude or dudette, you need to spend more time in the pool, get a swimming coach to help you. 40 minute 1k swim? Oh the horror!
I thought I would be a hot shot at swimming because I was a really good runner. Turns out swimming is hard as F----. I can do like a lap then I'm ready to sink to the bottom. It just uses your muscles differently I guess. Moral of the story is, dont feel bad. It's a different sport.
Please don't use the fast lane in the pool OP, and not the medium lane either
40 mins to swim 1 km suggests that you need to improve swimming specific fitness, but also that you may have some serious technique issues. I would suggest getting some lessons.
In terms of determining an equivalent time to a sub-6 mile, not easy to do. 1km freestyle isn't a standard event. But I would guess its well under 20 minutes.
Everyone is different, but for me swimming 1 km in 20 mins is an easier effort than running a mile in 6 minutes, and I am more proficient and better training at running than I am at swimming.
I started swimming relatively recently after a ramus stress fracture. Swam 2-3 times per week for 8 weeks or so. When I was running I’m a 1.40 half marathonner, and best 10k around 43 mins, and was doing 70-80k per week.
1st swim took 45 mins for 1.5k... Over 8 weeks with no specific sprint training this dropped to 32 mins / 1.6k which is bang on 2min/100m. According to the forums that’s called moderate lane pace. Dropped off swimming recently but due to reinjury am now back in the pool and swim 1.7k at 2.06 / 100m today.
Looking at a mate who does Ironman (and he’s done Kona lol) his average training pace for 3k is around 1.40-1.45/100m.
Imho swimming is about upper body and technique. I’ve always had weedy arms and shoulders, and the 10 year olds doing squads in the mornings swim way faster. When you get overtaken by a good swimmer it’s like they aren’t even trying.
Can’t push HR as high swimming for laps as running as you feel like you are dying. I’ve found no real difference between breathing every two or every 3 strokes so I alternate breathe and try to stretch out. The swimming equivalent of running cadence is strokes per lap, so look it up to see the level of obsession ppl have about this.
Anyway hope that helps from an average runner trying to swim.
As others have pointed out, keys here, in order, are technique and upper body strength.
Need the technique to make sure you aren't just flailing your your arms without generating propulsion.
Can be hard at a later age
I'm not a great swimmer (can swim, but not fast and I rarely swim laps) and I can still do a half mile in about 15 minutes or less, so 1k under 20 easily. Your form is probably bad, there's actually a lot of technique in swimming and learning the breathing pattern.
