I played soccer freshman through junior year (both club and hs) and ran XC my senior year and it was consistently some of the best days of my life. I wish I could go back and tell myself to do XC from the start. Much more of a team/family than the varsity soccer squad too, I don’t know if it’s the same for you though.
Are you sure he's a junior? I don't think he can be if he's already committed to a college. Also, I think the level of contact he's had with the coach would be violating NCAA contact rules if he's only a junior.
So my answer will assume you are a senior. Yes, do XC in college, not just because it could help you in track, but because you could surprise yourself and be really good at it. My D3 school recruited a 1:55/4:23 guy who played soccer all four years of high school and never raced longer than a mile. I am a 4:26 miler and 15:05 5k runner who runs over 70 miles a week and has been running-focused since 8th grade. In the first XC race of this kid's life, he beat me. Definitely give XC a shot.
