Just go through their roster and compare times. You won't get a scholarship. There top guys are foreigner and are 14 low guys. To walk on you need to have range, if you are 1:55 guy and also 15:30 5k guy yes you can run there, but if you're 1:55 guy and you a 16:40 guy probably not. 800 specialist I would shoot to not off at least 3 to 5 secs off. If you're a 1:50 to 1:52 you could walk on with a change to get a scholar your sophomore year, if you run 1:48 or so.
You could get a scholarship at a mid major, and transfer after you develop some. With that make sure the coach is good and he is actually developing guys. otherwise it will be a waste of time, and you'll be stuck.
1:55 guys are dime a dozen.
They are probably a nickel a dozen. 600 high school guys ran 1:55 last year.
You could probably walk on with that, but you're not looking at any money. If you also have a 4:20 mile or good cross country times then you'd be certain to get a spot, no money though. Everything changes if you drop a couple seconds though, a 1:52-1:53 guy could get a partial scholarship, depending on how recruiting is going for them.

Did you qualify for Boston?

OP only stated one event, 800m. Nearly all other posters have made statements regarding 800m and longer track events. Some posters are making statements regarding XC. OP may be a 6'3" 185 lbs. 400/800 runner who does not run XC. If you are 6'3" 185lbs. OP, throw the discus, throw javelin if your state does javelin. Do not be afraid to try pole vault.

6'1 160 pounds. I don't run XC but I'll give it a shot.

This is a profoundly stupid post. The guy has asked for walk on standards for running track. People posted very relevant replies that would allow op to gauge where they stand. You, Idiot #1, then critique people for essentially providing relevant context for the 800 time and proceed to tell op to try the field events. Go f~

Did your girlfriend say mean words to you this morning? Why are you so upset? I was correct that posters stated XC. I was correct that posters assumed 800/1600. Did you read OP's response to me? OP does not run XC. Further, OP has enough length at 6'1" for him to try discus throw. OP wants money from D-1 schools. If OP shows ability to be a field event athlete, that helps. You may have been one of the posters who stated OP had no chance due to 1:55 800m. I have an offspring who currently is a hs T&F athlete. I am encouraging said offspring to add throws and pole vault. A runner who can do field events is similar to a Am. football running back who can also play receiver. See Chuck Foreman. See Percy Harvin. Adding value helps!

I was in a similar position, ran 1:54.0 in high school and wanted to walk-on. The school I was interested in had minimum performance standards, in which they listed 1:56 for 800m.
I contacted the coach and he allowed me to train with the team for a couple of weeks and compete in a tryout with the other freshmen. I beat all except 1 and was able to walk-on to the team.
Contact the coach and let them know you are interested. They may be able to spare a few minutes to give advice in regards to the rest of the track season and summer training going into the new school year.
Good luck!
I agree if your kid is in 7th grade and even through 10 grade to try different events, but it idiotic to say adding value helps in track and field. if you are a Junior and senior, and you're looking to drop a couple seconds from your 800 time, do not waste your time with field events. To make it to college as an 800 specialist you need to train like an 800 specialist. If you are crazy athletic your college coach will make sure to move you into the multi group, and you'll develop in field events. All multis have a specialty, you'll have the advantage with your speed and some sprint training with all the running events. It might take you a year or 2 to learn the techniques for hurdling and the jumps, but you'll be fine. In conclusion, ignore this idiot, and focus on 400/800 if you're more speed or 800/1600 if you're more strength also run xc if you wanna run distance in college. The college will get two sports for one scholarship but only do that if you wanna run distance. if you wanna sprint and do 400 800, during the fall do your off-season stuff. lift, develop your speed, and work on injury resist/ forum type stuff.
like I said before 800 1:50 to 1:53 low will get you in and maybe a scholarship
400 you need to be sub 50 if you're a 400/800 guy.
1600 about sub 4:28 will get you on for sure, and sub 4:20 will probably get you a little bite of money
but since your question was school specific it all depends on what they need/ how recruiting is going.

Should look at juco first. You can pay cheaper tuition and qualify for nationals (1:54 is the standards). However to place top 5/top 4 have to be 1:53 and faster. To win it, usually around 1:50. If you do well there, you won't be asking where you can walk on at. If you want to be at ASU check out mesa college that is just about 4 or 5miles from ASU.
I like to pride myself for having great reading comprehension and situational awareness.
Since this is letsrun and proprietors of this site made their mark racing 5000m to Marathon, it is common practice on letsrun for high school runners to list XC, 1600m & 3200m PB. OP was asking about 800m and only listed 800m. Since it is highly unlikely a high school lad races 1:55 800m and sits around as a couch potato the other nine months of year, I inquired if he were an athlete. A Pop Warner teammate of mine, similar in size to OP continued to play football through at least high school. He was a sub-1:59 guy in high school. Since he was an athlete, said Pop Warner teammate took up discus in high school. It was not unreasonable to assume OP may be a 400/800 athlete. Many big name decathlon athletes were high school 200/400 athletes. There is no reason 400/800 athletes cannot do well in college at decathlon. I was offering other suggestions besides what other posters were offering. 1:55 800m by itself presents challenges. You stated 1:50. I am sure OP knows the value of racing 50/1:50 400/800.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
