If only three athletes hit the standard in let's say the 10k in the US and nobody else does, then do those three athletes go to the olympics granted they finish with a decent effort at the trials regardless of place?
Basically, the ranking system only comes into play if a country has less than three athletes qualified? Is this correct?
Or is a a countries olympic committee able to override the time standards with rankings if they so choose?
Not important because we will have more than three runners eligible.
My understanding is that it doesnt matter if an individual qualifies by time or ranking. Anybody who qualifies either way is eligible. A country can choose who they send, up to three qualified athletes.
So for example, if we enter into the trials and have 6 runners with the time and 6 runners in the rankings, any of those 12 can be chosen. Presumably, the top 3 at trials out of those 12 would be sent to the Olympics.
