Take a deep breath... ready?
What is the best 3200 meter guy your coach has ever coached? Unless it is absolutely terrible (greater than 10:00) you are fine. Your coach is limiting you because they have a plan. If he has a plan for you, trust him. Yes, he may want to limit you to a lower mileage than you want, but that’s okay. Think about it, if your coach is smart enough and forward-thinking enough to have a plan for you, he knows what he is doing. Say it with me, “My coach knows what he is doing.” Repeat it out loud.
Yes, you may have a different training philosophy than you do, but that is okay. Trusting your training is a million times more important than running an extra 10 mpw in junk miles. Yes, that may help you, but fighting your coach for four years is much, much worse. Two things will happen if you keep trying to do this. 1) You will resent him. 2) He will resent you. #2 is clearly already happening. You will prove nothing. You will gain nothing.
I know you want to be the best, I understand. I was in your position once. I wanted to run more than my coach wanted...but I never resented him for it. I developed just fine. 60-70mpw as a senior will not be “limiting” you. Talent will. Hate to break it to you but thats the truth. Running 100mpw might make you marginally better, but not being in constant conflict with your coach will make you worse because runners can’t run under two coaches at the same time. You can’t “re-do” track workouts every week. Ritz was amazing because he was talented, not because he ran 100mpw. Maybe he ran 10 seconds faster for 5k because of it, but I doubt your mileage progression would have stopped him from dominating and going D1.
There is another thread bouncing around right now where the coach is actually terrible. Your coach is not one of them. Trust me. Trust your training. Please. If you don’t you can’t trust anyone on your team, and that’s a terrible position to be in. Don’t put yourself in that position if you don’t have to.
If you have more questions, I’ll be happy to respond.
