would it be better to get a male or female?

Shouldn’t matter. Breed is a better predictor of personality.
Who cares?
As soon as you put the stupid monster outside, it will be coyote food. Damn dogs??
Just make sure to leash it when outdoors.

You don't want a female runt. Otherwise it doesn't matter.
Neither. Many runners hate dogs, for obvious reasons, and much more.
Get an intersex one, you will win Crufts most likely.
I always get a laugh when I run by someone carrying that baggie full of dukey. Too each their own.

Apologies if I missed a joke here but assuming you're serious - why not?

Having volunteered at a dog shelter for a number of years - the sex really doesn't matter; you need to do your research on what you want in a dog.
Also, remember that while it's great to adopt an animal from a shelter - pay special attention to why the dog was put there in the first place. Sometimes it's due to the human issues (like moving, or can no longer afford it); but many times it is behavioral, which can be overcome with a LOT of work and commitment. Don't be blinded by how cute Fido is - do your homework.
We adopted a Staffordshire Terrier out to a nice guy...he said he did his research, the home visit went well (yes, we checked out the homes that we adopted dogs into). He signed up for dog training courses...etc.
We got the dog back because when he left for work one day, he forgot to kennel the dog, and it literally chewed up his entire front room. That was in the dog's profile, the new owner knew it, yet still wasn't able to do the things necessary to assimilate the dog into his life.
We got a Beagle a few years ago to keep our big guy company while the Wife & I were at work. The people who brought the Beagle in said they wanted a lap dog and the Beagle didn't want to sit near anyone. It took about 9 months and the Beagle is now a lap dog. Still pretty independent but now an independent lap dog.
