Did anyone notice the fastest W600 qualifier was HS Jr Athing Mu, who ran a blistering 1:26.23 (HS national record?). That is equivalent to a 2:00.x

Well, sorry for the backhanded compliment, but you were spot on....His meet record did not seriously affect the top heat.
example
existing meet record from 2018 is 4:00.00
three runners run sub 4:00.00 in 2019
they all break the existing meet record
one of them wins the event and becomes the new meet record holder

A 60 flat last 400 on an indoor track is quite good.
Definitely short. What you're failing to appreciate is the fact that she turned early at the fish shop.
What the hell are you talking about? I never asked that question.
When have we ever taken the position that skipping the NCAA is always wrong?
When Hunter went pro I thought it was the right decision, mainly because I heard he was getting a ton of money. If he's getting offered 10 years/$5 million as an 18-year-old kid out of HS, he'd be a fool not to take that (I don't know if it was actually that much, but I heard it was a significant amount). There isn't much money in our sport and I would never blame an athlete for cashing in when they can.

you could theoretically break the MR in a heat and then DNF the final. I don't know of it ever happening, and certainly not indoors, but it is at least theoretically possible.
cheers.

I know that at least one of our state high school records is from the prelims. Don't know if that runner lost the finals without looking it up, but it would be possible.

... and there is of course that one time when Lou Jones got the WR when finishing 2nd because Lee Evans, who won the race, was wearing the wrong kind of spikes so his record claim was not allowed. that was at the US Olympic Trials at Echo Summit in 1968.
cheers.

ouch. It does seem like Kate has floundered a bit at BTC....
I'm not sure that's fair to Kate. Since her breakthrough year in 2016, she's been pretty consistent. She's medaled at USAs, and done well at a few second-tier races, but she's struggled in the big-time races. Her best race was at the Trials, and that race was such a clusterf**k, it's hard to know what to make of her win there.

Nope. By the time the second place dude “breaks” the record the first place dude already finished and has created a new record. Runners 2 and 3 never break the record. The do run faster than the old record but neither of them are ever meet record holders.

Example - Drew Hunter breaks the meet record in the slow heat. 2 hrs later, his meet record is broken in the fast heat. Why is this even a discussion? It’s clearly possible and could’ve easily happened. I’m glad it didn’t.
Anyways, incredible run for Mu. I can’t wait to see her duke it out with Rogers in the final.

ouch. It does seem like Kate has floundered a bit at BTC, which is a shame, because I think she's one of the smartest and grittiest athletes out there. Total guess, but maybe she flourishes better in a smaller training group - she's mentioned she's pretty camera shy, and BTC seems to be all about the large groups and lots of cameras...everywhere.
You’re right about the large group, but lots of cameras? BTC is one of the most secretive groups in the USA running scene. How many Flotrack workout Wednesdays are there from BTC? Basically 0. Even NOP films some workouts.
ACC and SEC conference meets more exciting than this rando snoozefest.

For the record, right before she joined Bowerman she wasn't running well either. She's had a good last year.
Was it really 2 hours later when the 2nd heat ran last night? Reading up on this today and just assumed the 2nd Heat was immediate after the first. I mean, it was bad enough when I thought those guys found out the time they needed to beat (and subsequently went out much too slow to do so) right before they stepped up to the starting line. But having 2 hours to prepare and still fail so epically? Bush League. Worse, Busch Light League.

Fantastic second half for Starlipper, 9:58 for 2 miles for 7th

Yeah, great pacing, closed in 70. Good for her. Great decision to race here instead of the PA indoor meet, where I believe the winner of the 3,000 only ran 9:56.
Anyone know where that ranks her all-time on the HS 2-mile list? I'm pretty sure top 5.
It’s number 5 all time - Tuohy’s 9:58 high was number 5, but now Starliper’s knocked it down one.
