If you really get 3-4s/m if someone else is breaking the wind it kind of seems like a better choice to try and follow them
My vote . . . I would 100% go with the pace group. If after 5 or 10k it either feels too fast, or they are banking time vs 2:45, which might send you to a huge meltdown late even if it feels good early, then bail on the group.
