got sick again this winter and settled into my chest. Not being able to train hard blows when you have races coming up. plz rant below about sickness, injury, other reasons youre not able to run; I have sympathy for y'all.

I had some cold/cough/congestion for 3 months cause it turned into bronchitis. Terrible! Had 2 rounds of antibiotics, inhalers, prednisone! I felt like I went from an athlete to a smoker Overnight.
Wrecked my running plans. Doc advised me not to run. When I returned to running it was scary because I’d be back coughing again...
Now back but whoa it was bad and still just jogging rn
Weather here has been warm cold warm cold. Couple days ago was 70 this morning I raced an 8k in 18 degrees. Haven’t stopped sneezing since.
Credited. Flu to pneumonia here. Wrecks indoor season. The upside though is that unlike hard to diagnose injuries, you know that things will clear up in a week or two or three if you rest. I’m probably going to end up at 6 weeks no running. Trying to do a little bit of leg strengthening — last time I had a injury lay-off ended up getting shin splints for the first time when I returned
Happens most years for me. Last year was worse. Sinus infection that I couldn't shake. I got the anti-biotics and kicked it. Was worth going to the doctor for a change. It cost me my goal marathon time. It sucks, but what are you going to do? Running while sick is stupid.
I usually get sick when I back off mileage on a down week.
Guy I know ran through sickness and got viral myocarditis. You're doing the right thing not running. The most discipline and hardest thing to do is take time off. But no, everyone wants to pin their F'ing Strava weeklies at 70mpw.
Bronchitis ruined my senior track season in high school.
54 now. Solid 71 miles 2 weeks ago and got blindsided by a cold. 34 and 51 slow miles the last two weeks. Still coughing after run but almost over it.
I contracted an upper respiratory infection 3 1/2 weeks ago. Finally shook it mid-week. I decided not running was a better choice than trying to run through it.
Stomach flu this week. Couldn't eat. Stomach hurt so bad, it kept me awake for about 4 nights in a row. Today is first day I feel better. Hopefully start running a little on Sunday or Monday. Was able to help with the kids little league teams today so that was good.
I used to rail against sickness and injury but now I know the genius of them - they provide the body with needed and vital rest. I always come back stronger!
After four consecutive winters of deep respiratory infections (followed by months of crippling allergies) I finally decided to address the problem with fasting, diet and smarter training. I haven't had so much as a niggle or a sniffle since December 2015.

+1! Including the time line! In 2015 I stopped following fad diets based on ridiculous “data”. Up to that point I had been vegan for about 5 years. In 2015 I switched to paleo, started eating a lot of dairy again, stopped taking all these ridiculous “supplements” my vegan friends had recommended, and started drinking beer again—haven’t been sick since.
I havent checked this thread in a hot minute but it sounds like you all are doing the smart thing! It's always hard to keep myself from training hard if I'm sick, and I'm always tempted to try to keep the mileage up but I know better by now to just ride it out and come back stronger. Hope you all are doing better now and can get out there and run very soon!

LOL. Well played.
Starting week # 2 out of the hospital following meningitis, the scary kind. I can’t even fly home yet, much less run. While I’m worried about regaining all my weight and fitness , right now I’m mostly just glad to be alive.
That shits scary my dood. glad to hear it ended up alright in the end
Since December: step throat (twice), a cold (caught WHILE still on f’ing antibiotics for strep the first time), some sort of GI bug that cost me a week and 6lbs, and now? The flu.
Also had bursitis and a hip flexor strain in Nov and Dec. it’s been a rough stretch. I had 7 healthy weeks where I felt like a king. At least I was able to get in a ton of good workouts. Hoping the flu doesn’t keep me out long and I can maintain some fitness. Racing in 6 weeks.
Running the type of mileage serious runners do severely lowers the immune system. Since switching to mainly play based and cutting out dairy (mainly milk and cream) I get sick far less.
