Despite their outward concern, the networks are loving this turn of events. FoxNews, CNN, and, MSNBC make money selling ads on their regular programming and now may not have to televise 2-3 hours of speech/rebuttal for free. The over-the-air stations can just run their primetime shows (with ads) and reap the viewership that normally tunes out on SOTU night. If he tries to do this rally style, TV (other than FoxNews) may not feel obligated to carry it at all citing that it is merely a partisan political event and not a true SOTU speech.
Trump comes out the loser here. He doesn't get the bully pulpit needs and attention he craves. His message only gets shown to those already in his camp. The remaining public will only see slanted soundbites deemed stupid or unhinged by other media outlets.
It may not matter, I get the sense that he is trying to start a war with Venezuela for distraction/galvanizing purposes.
