Do you know any runners who are completely obsessed with the sport who with theor knowledge, mileage and attitude towards running you wouldnt expect to be slow...? Only to find out that they are.
There is a park 5 minutes down the road from me. It is a quite good park for running, has a few good trials, has good hills, great loops and to top it off it has a perfect quarter mile flat loop round a lake, it attracts quite a few local runners and there is this one guy who spends a lot of time in the park. He definitely doubles because sometimes I will see him there in the morning and in the evening in the same day when I double, I have also seem him do intervals and reps around the 400m loop so he definitely doesn’t train like a hobbyjogger.
I am a 16:30 guy and the fact he was doubling and doing repeats lead me to assume he was about the same level but recently, I went into a local 5k with a few friends from my amateur basketball rec. league team, I saw him there and was expecting him to be my only competition. I treated it like some sort of sub-tempo ish run and took off at a blistering 6 minute mile pace and won the whole damn thing cruising in at 18:43 and second place was about 20 seconds behind. Anyway the guy who I saw in the park finished about 4th or 5th in low 20s, I approached him and was like hey I know you from the park, we got talking and he told me he has been running for 12 years, runs 60-70 miles per week and he told me it has taken him 2 years plus speedwork to drop his 5k time from 23 minutes down to 20:xx and his lifetime goal has always been sub 20. His next goal was something like a 1:35 half marathon or something. My first thought was that he wasn’t training properly but we got talking some moe and ot tirns out he actually does know a thing or two about training the right way, he would actually make a pretty decent coach in my opinion. He talked the whole time constantly about running, it made me think he was a bit autistic. His passion for both the sport and the training is definitely there but damn this guy is s l o w.
I’m pretty sure there are lots of him out there, people who do not train like hobbyjoggers but have hobbyjogger times. Does anyone else personally know people like this?
