Hi there,
I was wondering: how do you / a coach / anyone comes to a conclusion what a given runner lacks? For example:
- aerobic base = more easy runs
- speed = more short fast intervals
- speed #2 = plyometrics, drills
- speed endurance = more longer intervals (?)
- vo2max = vo2max training :)
- strength - some extra gym work: squats, dead lifts
- faster lactate clearance rate = more tempo runs (?)
- guts = mental training (?)
- economy = fast reps, hill sprints taking longer rest (?)
- anaerob capacity
- form = drills
- higher lactate threshold
- higher lactic acid / pain tolerance
- and the list goes on and on
For the sake of example, let's assume someone is a 40:00 10k runner, how do you identify what to train if he or she wants to go sub 38?
For a sub19 5k runner wanting to go sub18?
1:28 hm to sub1:25?
3+ marathoner to sub3?
I know this is one of the more (or even the single most complex) knowledge in training, and also it is highly individualized, so I don't think some kind of a miracle one-size-fits-all answer shows up, just curious about some personal experience, stories, case studies etc.
