Hi,
My girlfriends daughter is a great student. She has a 4.5 GPA at a Catholic school that is very rigorous. She is taking the ACT in a few weeks so I do not know what score range she will be in. Her XC PR is 18:30, so I realize she is not setting the world on fire there but I hope she improves her senior year. Off hand I do not have her track PR's, she runs the 800 and 1600. She does well in her track meets, but she is in a small Catholic school league here in Los Angeles that isn't ultra competitive. The local public schools crush it, and work out way harder than her team, which is frustrating. Anyhow she loves XC and track, and wants to run in college.
D1 is everyones dream and I assume were more money is too? Of course I want to push for the Ivy or Patriot League, but looking at times she isn't competitive for the teams doing better in XC/track, and the slower teams people on this forum rip on that they get zero help with admissions or financially so that sort of crosses those schools off the list if its true. I've heard from some parents that certain schools, even Stanford, are FREE if your parents make less than $75k as long as you get in, but that sounds too good to be true. Her mom makes a little more than that, so it might not apply. If there are academic schools that have some sort of deal like that, I would love to know.
I do not know if the Little Ivies and other D3 schools have pull with admissions and financial aid or not? And I have no clue what D2 schools might have good academics, I looked up various lists of academic D2s on the internet but frankly never heard of most of them. If you are applying for grad school someday (she thinks she wants to be a therapist or psychologist), a brand name school helps in my experience. Same with applying for jobs.
I would like her to use her brains and go to a good academic school to possibly set herself up for the future, but just skimming the threads on here it seems many of the more academic schools might not have scholarship money, or much pull with admissions. I played college football (at a service academy and Patriot League), and used to be a college strength coach (at an Ivy and a Patriot League/Big East). When it comes to football, mens basketball, hockey, etc it is an all together different ball game. Coaches come looking for you, there is big time help with admissions (I had appointments to all four service academies and accepted at most of the Ivies and it wasn't from grades alone!), and whether its scholarships, grants or financial aid they really make it appealing. So is trying to find money for women's XC and track if your kid isn't a super star basically wishful thinking?
Would there be any academic schools you would suggest, or would want your kid running for, whether D3 or a terrible D1 team? Schools where having great grades and being somewhat ok at XC and track, could help with admissions if the coach wanted you, and help with financial aid, grants, or scholarships?
She absolutely loves strength and conditioning, and I know from my coaching days some XC and track coaches are anti-weightroom, so if perhaps you know of schools that are actually pro-lifting with nice facilities that is a bonus as well.
Thanks for any suggestions....People on here seem knowledgeable about what schools have scholarship money or not, what coaches are great or not, and what schools have pull with admissions or not.... I am clueless when it comes to XC and track.
Thanks
