I'll bite. Here are my answers, for continuous pushups to failure:
Men:
Bare minimum: 25
Repectable: 80
Fit: 120+
Women:
Bare minimum: 15
Respectable: 60
Fit: 90+

He or she has some decent numbers. I would suggest for beginners - sets of 25. More advanced - sets of 50. Advance - sets of 100 and above. Like 10 sets of 100 or 125.
Interesting perspective .
I’ve heard Alan Webb managed 93 in his prime, which you’d class as respectable.
Ask Alberto and Mo.
I've eaten seven at one time. Of course orange is the best flavor.
To be considered healthy on the fitnessgram test HS junior and senior males need to do 17 or more and females 8 or more.
Pushups and weight are inversely related. I knew a 55 foot shot putter who couldn't to 40 push ups. I'd say 25 is respectable more than 40 excellent.
May I suggest thinking about it a different way? The respectable number of pushups is whatever you can do right now; provided you are striving to improve. Don’t worry about anyone else’s standards on this but your own.

Most woke answer
One for every lover you've had
In that case I’d have to do 587.
Don't do push-ups. The reason they exist is because they don't need any equipment. Bench press and inclined bench press so you can increase weight appropriately.
My college teammate did 3x150 just because he was hyped up for everything. I'm sure it didn't help him run fast.
Pushups are a poor substitute for when you don't have a pullup bar
After the 2007 Park Forest Scenic 10 Mile, I had to walk 2 miles back to the train station. Despite using my complimentary food festival tickets on a delicious pork chop sandwich, I was still famished. My route took me right past the Walgreens, so I swung in looking for a refreshing treat, and naturally chose orange pushups. It was something like $1 for one, or $2 for a box of six. I was able to eat two on the walk to the station and one more waiting for the train, but there’s no eating on the L and I knew they wouldn’t survive the trip back to downtown, so I left them behind, sitting on top of a trash can. I only hope somebody else found them and consumed them before it was too late. So my answer is: 6 pushups would’ve been a respectable number that day, but I could only manage 3.

Pushups and pullups work quite different muscles ... do both.
Trouble with "how many.." is that it really depends on whether people do then with proper form... you see plenty of people doing some kind of weird head bob action with a tiny bit of arm movement that they obviously think is a push up, but is only working their neck muscles :/

You are too high if you are talking push ups using correct form. My best during the PFT when I was in the Army was 85. I was in very good all around shape and specifically trained to be able to Max (100 points) the push up part of the PFT and not a lot of people in my Battalion were better. (The 2 Mile run and sit up parts came easier.)
These appear to be the current standards:
http://www.apft-standards.com/pushup-male.htmlWell first you gotta define a respectable technique.
Two pushups are very respectable at the end of an Olympic Marathon
Don’t bother. Almost everyone is overly strong anteriorly and weak posteriorly. Do pull-ups, rows, posterior deltoids etc.. Makes good posture reflexive.

that's impressively tall for a shot putter.
cheers.
