If there was any doubt the patients are running the asylum get a gander at these two new events the IAAF Braintrust has come up with.

I like watching the mixed relays.
Why exactly does IAAF trying this out make them mentally insane and idiots?
I have no problem with teams containing M&F members just the ideas behind these new events.
Shuttle hurdles are cool.
2x2x400 is silly.

Why? It sounds fun!

Maybe my reading comprehension is lacking, arent these normal relays that just are mixed gender? The 2x2x400 is just a 4x400 that has 2 men and 2 women on each team, right?
Maybe you could explain what you dont like about them?
They're direct head to head races, so should be pretty easy to follow for spectators, so that seems positive. They're a moderate length, so should be watchable for casual fans.

No it's 1 and 1 running 2 legs apiece

Only 1 man and 1 woman run the relay for each team. So each athlete runs 400m twice.
Still waiting for the discus/steeple/race walk/thumb-twiddling relay. I think it is coming soon.
Seriously mate? wrote:

Ok, that does seem like a strange addition. It seems more like something a high school team would do for fun in an inter squad meet or as a workout than a serious competition.
Adding the shuttle relays I like, though. They're pretty epic to watch. Although a pro race might lack some of the terrifying drama of the high school level as everybody cringes in fear of a collision when some kid who has never hurdled before crashes right into oncoming traffic.

Take a moment and try to visualize what the layout for the shuttle hurdles would look like with the 1st mens 42 inch hurdle set 13.72 m from the start with 9.14 meters between and a 14.02 run in next to a lane of 33 inch hurdles the first 13 m from the start with 8.5 m between and a 20.5m dash to the finish line.
This crackpot set-up is going to attract throngs of fans to the stadium-- seriously?!?
A 45s lap a 52s lap a 45 s lap followed by a 45s lap-- sounds more like work out plan than a compelling race.

Im not sure why the layout of the hurdles is a negative, it seems fine to me. It shouldnt be very hard to follow for even a random non track fan.
No, it wont attract throngs of people, but i think it will be more likely to push a casual fan off the fence and get them to watch it.
I agree about the 2x2x400, I had thought it was just a mixed gender 4x4. I do think a mixed gender 4x4 is fun to watch.
