When I got injured last year, I started with aqua jogging, but found it to be such a low intensity workout that I started swimming instead. Now I can do flip turns.

Aqua jogging is phase 1. Phase 2 will be Alter-G at probably 1/2 gravity, then slowly increasing the G. Then running on grass, etc. Rupp is a tough. Enduring years of the training, and facing his first major injury. But I'm sure he'll get back to 100% . He's driven and motivated.
Agreed. It really looks like he's ballooned up into an unrecognizable behemoth. Deport him.

Agreed, I never understood how anyone could stand the stationary bike. The absolute worst of x-training. Also why not just normal bike.
There is NO WAY I'd put a 2:06 marathoner on a normal bike out on the roads with all the idiots driving around. Way too risky unless on a supervised path. Get him healthy and running again - and then get him out on his normal running routes.
Nothing wrong with chubbing up while getting back into shape. Extra weight makes the legs stronger. Same reason baseball players practice swinging with a donut on their bat.

Big baby. Auqua jogging rocks, as opposed to not being able to get any kind of running motion going in your body at all.
I once did it for 3 hours a day, a one hour and a two-hour session. Without a belt. Worked up to it. Would rather exercise than not.
Keep it in the big picture perspective folks. Running is a privilege of health, not a right.

Bro, give me a break. I'll aqua jog for hours because I do fundamentally agree with you, doing something is better than nothing. Doesn't mean I don't despise aqua jogging and can't wait to not have to do it.
1. Rupp's aqua jogging sucks. He should be replicating running cadence, 180 strides per minute.
2. Of course he has gained weight. He probably took a break from his thyroid supplementation for the surgery and recovery periods, hence a gain of body fat.

Stationary bike works. Efficient, safe, no impact.
You can always put it in front of a TV and that's fine for "just doing something" days. But the stat bike is also very useful for punishing yourself, without impact, and, on those days, you shouldn't be able to focus on much else except the effort.
Sure, it's a torture chamber. The reward is that you aren't too beat up to do your next day's run. Or the same day's run as a double. And then there's the reward on race day, when you beat the people who haven't been doing the extra.
There was a time I did do "normal" biking as cross training. But it's way less efficient and, as pointed out, dangerous. I knew Webb wasn't going to last as a tri-biker and, sure enough, he took a bad crash very quickly and that was the end of that. Verzbicas also crashed horribly.
Except marathoning has nothing to do with biking. He's doing it right. Aqua jogging. Want to do it wrong? Replace easy running with long bike rides.

The post i responded to was about "anyone" not specifically about Rupp.
Yes, super-elite marathoners in open competition have to run or break their bodies trying. That's not a demographic that covers much of the board.
I won't pull out specific credentials but I've done very well at long distance racing with my approach. There is more than one way to skin the cat.
I was deeply worried that Rupp would not be able to return to top form after such a serious injury and the required layoff. Now that the OP had made it clear that Rupp is well on his way to obesity, I have given up all hope.

It could help Rupp to gain some muscle.

Wouldn't the underwater treadmill be more effective?
Sure, but there's impact with the underwater treadmill. I don't think he's there yet.
I assume by running routes, you mean the 300m grass loop he does his long runs on. Or the treadmill? Maybe the alter-g.
Did he have one leg or both? I have battled it my entire life. Had a cortisone shot in the bursa a few years ago which did wonders but pain is back. What else can be done other than surgery? Once it gets bad, rest seems to nothing for it.
So if someone runs a slower marathon than rupp is more okay if they get mowed down by a car? Fascinating logic

Yeah, I've definitely seen babies run faster than Galen is moving in that pool. He's got a ways to go, that's for sure.
