Some people race because they enjoy the competition rather than the awards.
Similarly some people bust their butts at work because the enjoy the challenges rather than the money.
There is no right way to do life. Some people are lucky enough to combine their passion with their work and get incredibly rich doing so. They truly enjoy their work and find meaning in it.
Other people hate their job but do it well enough to get paid a tidy sum that enables them to go do other things that they enjoy.
I think there is another significant portion of the population who are financially secure but fear ever being poor (again) and sees their savings & investments as a security against it. They may or may not be enjoying their lives currently, but live satisfied without the fear of future poverty.
Who's to say what's right or best.
