      • A lot of the rich people I know purchase a fairly nice car and house, but never seem to travel or do anything else fun with their money. One couple who I’m thinking of don’t even have kids to pass it down to. What’s the purpose of making all this money if it’s just going to be sat on?

      • Have you ever heard about any of these people needing to spend time with psychiatrists or being drug addicts or committing suicide? How the about the very wealthy who are spending their money on things to make them happy? Those things are synonymous. So now think about which group actually seems happy.

      • Different people enjoy different things. As a poor person, your entire financial goal is presumably to go to Disney World as frequently as possible. When you’re at Disney World you don’t see any rich people, so you assume that they aren’t doing anything enjoyable. In reality, they are doing things that they enjoy, but they just enjoy different things than you.

      • About the only thing i do with the large sum i've amassed is live in an expensive city, but even given that, i live in a smallish house and not one of the most high-end neighborhoods. Living in a nice area is about the only thing i can think of that makes me feel fortunate to have the financial means to do so.
        That's what matters to me, and knowing that my wife and I can provide for my family and pay for children's college whereever they go.
        The funny thing is, spending money for its own sake doesn't do much for me/us in terms of happiness.

      • I think it’s because you aren’t rich yourself so you haven’t exposed yourself to many rich people. I’m sure in the one case you stated it’s an anomaly. Anyone currently on winter break at a 5 star island resort knows that there are tons of rich people that spend money and I would say most do. Where I am the standard rate over Christmas/new years is $1750 a night and I’ve seen villas priced over 15k a night. There’s people just walking around with bottles of Dom Perignon, Krug, and Vueve Cliquot like it means nothing. Trust me rich people spend there money.

        Do they tip you well when you bring them their expensive bubbly? Or are you on the maintenance crew?

        On their death bed do you think they will want to see a mini statement of their bank account? Nope, they will want their loved ones with them and possibly connect with God.

        I don't know what you're talking about. I worked for two rich guys that travelled all over world, paid for $1500 prostitutes, went on hunting trips that included catering and guides, ordered take out from Ruth's Chris and left during the workday to play golf at their $250K membership country club.

        Because most people, rich or poor, are boring.

      • Some people race because they enjoy the competition rather than the awards.

        Similarly some people bust their butts at work because the enjoy the challenges rather than the money.

        There is no right way to do life. Some people are lucky enough to combine their passion with their work and get incredibly rich doing so. They truly enjoy their work and find meaning in it.

        Other people hate their job but do it well enough to get paid a tidy sum that enables them to go do other things that they enjoy.

        I think there is another significant portion of the population who are financially secure but fear ever being poor (again) and sees their savings & investments as a security against it. They may or may not be enjoying their lives currently, but live satisfied without the fear of future poverty.

        Who's to say what's right or best.

      • I'm probably wealthy by most people's standards but live in a small house and drive a modest car. Family takes a nice vacation 1-2x per year and that's about it. What I like is not worrying about money. When I'm certain I can be financially independent for the rest of my life without worries, I'll enjoy it a bit more. Plus I'll have plenty to pass to the kids.

        But that feeling knowing that the wife and I could be out of work for 5 years and it wouldn't hurt us is orgasmic.
