Nothing against Norman, but there's no way he has the endurance to run anywhere near 1:44 like some people are suggesting. He'd be lucky to break 1:50.

the deal with a sprinter, is that at 400m he's already facing death, in terms of feeling.
the 800 is only for seal types.
for the distance guys, the 800 is a joke, they don't have the anaerobic threshold to feel the pain that the sprinters do.
again, its the rare bird that can do the 800.
the most interesting event in running .

Nope. In HS our 46.7 400 guy ran 800 on a dare. He went 53/63. He was okay to ~650m and then it was a total death march to the finish. He never ran the 800 again.
53 plus 53 is a 146/
that is `18 meters off a 144.
end of story

What are his 100/200m PRs?
He is the only athlete to win both the 400 and 800 m Olympic tit wrote:
Has anyone in this thread heard of Alberto Juantorena? 400m PR of 44.26 and went on to run 1:43.44 for 800m.
There has been three men to sprint sub-45 400m and race sub-1:44 800m. I do not believe Juantorena was necessarily genetically unique, it was bold/risky for Juantorena to attempt both, 1976 Olympics. I believe there has been many sub-45 400 metres men with the ability to also race sub-1:44 800 metres. The vast majority of sub-45 400m sprinters don't attempt to maximize their 800m potential due to risk of injury, risk of extreme fatigue while attempting to get through both 400m heats & 800m heats and stress of 800m tactics due to one turn stagger. If 4x800 metres were a standard NCAA, World Championship and Olympic event, we would see more 400m men & women maximizing their 800m ability.
This thread should be about be about about ultimate potential in the 800; if they run the 400 it's as an 800 runner with the speed to compete in the 400. The question is how having world class sprinting speed translates to the 800.
