This proves two things. First, the bowl games outside of the 4 team playoff are meaningless. Second, people in Dallas look for any excuse to cancel things.
Add this to the 2013 Dallas Marathon, and you see that in Dallas, EVERYTHING IS CANCELLED!!!!!!!!!!

Lightning is pretty amazingly serious and dangerous stuff. A cancellation, not a postponement, is pretty wild, though.
I don't even begin to pretend to know the decision making process which led to a cancellation, but I imagine that the choice to cancel, not postpone, was based on pretty careful assessment of the forecast, the use of the stadium, the logistics of resuming play at a later time, and the legal ramifications in having to deal with sponsors, fans, and universities following a cancellation.
But it is ironic, and amusing in a twisted way!
I was reminded of a 1980s Providence (RI) Journal newspaper report of a big Amtrak wreck, with fatalities, printed on the same page as a huge "Ride the rails with Amtrak" advertisement. It was a tragedy, of course, but there was twisted humor in that juxtaposition.

Basically, they knew the weather was a possibility ahead of time, and mapped out a plan. Every lightning strike within 8 miles of Cotton Bowl (Dallas) reset a 30-minute clock. After a number of these, with players antsy, more weather on the radar as possible (NWS had a tornado watch for North/central TX), a wet field, etc., the decision to cancel was made.
The Servpro First Responder Bowl has been played at the Cotton Bowl every year since 2011. It was switched sponsorships three times, from the TicketCity Bowl to the Heart of Dallas Bowl presented by PlainsCapital Bank to the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl.
Hopefully the Cheez-It Bowl won't suffer a similar fate.
They need to move this game and re-brand it. My suggestions.....
1) drop Servpro as a sponsor
2) have 23&me sponsor the game
3) have all D1 college football players genomes analyzed and specifically look for genetic markers of non-responders to aerobic / altitude training
4) form two “all-star” teams composed of those in D1 ball that have the worst genetics in regards to response to aerobic training
5) rename the bowl game the “Non-responders Bowl”
6) play the game in Gunnison, CO are Western...outside...in December
7) sit back and enjoy all the cases of HAPE and HACE

Wait until you meet thin-blooded Floridians. Cold emergencies are declared when it gets just under 50 degrees. Headlines are made and people panic because they cannot tolerate nice weather in the upper 40's.
It also cost Big money to refund The hundreds of people who attended the game.
