Word from a reliable source is that UNC's brand new track is defective. A bit of background: UNC had a perfectly good track on campus next to Carmichael Hall (where the Tar Heels played basketball back in the Michael Jordan days). But they decided a couple of years ago to tear it up in order to expand the field where the women's soccer team plays .... because UNC Women's Soccer. Anyway, the plan was to build a brand new track near the UNC golf course, which is a couple of miles from campus. Everyone knew it was in a flood plain, but that didn't stop them from building it there.
The new track is finished but hasn't even officially opened yet, and it is already broken. According to the source, it is "likely a result of the hurricane [Florence] waters, as the concrete base moved/separated. Outdoor meets cancelled, likely closed for a complete redo of the foundation." Someone else commented that "the track was completely flooded shortly after it was poured - this was quite visible on the on-line camera and as I recall it stayed under water for at least a day (maybe more) ..... could very well be the source of the problem ..... and/or maybe there were other errors in its construction ..... but the bottom line is - THIS TRACK IS BAD"
Anyone else heard about this?
