Okay LetsRun,
The time has come for this ultra runner to ditch the bulky Hoka trail shoes for a bit and don the racing flats, or perhaps even a pair of spikes. Since LetsRun understands how slow, unfit for proper running competition (roads, tracks) all ultrarunners are, I'd like to finally attempt to run fast to please this hallowed collection of runners.
So, what can I run for a downhill mile?
For reference:
-I've been running ultramarathons for 8 years, including 9 100 milers (2 this year).
-I have not competed in sub marathon races in those 8 years, and rarely ran a "speed workout."
-I ran collegiately with multiple 8K XC times under 25:00.
-My mile PR is 4:23, from a practice time trial.
-Last year, the day after a marathon, I ran 4:42 for a downhill mile.
-In October I ran a mountainous 100 miler, then took 2 weeks off, before beginning "track training."
-Two weeks ago I ran a track time trial in 4:53.
In 3 weeks there is a group of guys getting together to race a downhill mile in our town. It's a consistent grade the entire mile losing ~140 feet.
Predict......
