Its really popular these days to say that exercise doesn't help with losing weight and that it is all about dieting. Theres been some emphasis on this with studies showing dieting is superior, problem is these are short term studies. None these arguments take into account weight maintenance. Exercise definitely helps lose weight, so of course running will help. And so long as you maintain a routine you will keep the weight off which is just as important as losing it in the first place. This is where all diet advice goes wrong because almost nobody sticks to any diet long term.
The other problem with these arguments that exercise doesnt help is they almost always include stuff about how 'people overestimate how much calories they burn and then overeat'. Well great, but thats besides the point. Just because some people think running a few miles every other day means they can pig out doesnt mean exercise doesnt matter or help it means people have a preconception based on faulty logic from somewhere.
Anyway, thats my rant. Btw, I was very active when I was younger, gained 40lbs over the course of 4-5 years when I became a parent and lost it all in 3 months from running and cleaning up my diet. I didn't do any special diet, just limited snacks and junk food and ran a bunch. Its been 6 years since then and I have kept it off but maintaining running and even when I pig out over the holidays I just dial it back and keep going, no worries.
