I have been running recreationally for about a year-and-a-half. Average 15 to 25 miles per week. I do one to two days of cross training and light strength training and always have a day off each week.
I have done 6 half marathons in the last 14 months and a number of other 5 and 10ks.
Recently some family emergencies created a lot of stress for me and I upped my red wine intake and ate whatever I wanted for a few months and put on 5-6 lbs. I knew that was going to slow me down and I am making some slight changes before the holidays to get a jumpstart.
However my performance has greatly suffered and I'm not sure if it's due to the weight or if I'm exhausted.
The first weekend of November I set my own personal record for a 10K at a 7:48 pace. The following weekend I begrudgingly ran a half marathon at 8:35 pace and I was suffering for most of it. I just didn't have it in me. Relatively speaking though, my best pace for a half-marathon thus far is at an 8:31 pace. The first half marathon I ever did was at an 8:39 pace so apparently this is it for me. Lol.
I took a couple of weeks of running off after my last half but did cross-train using a stair mill and a rowing machine. I am now slowly getting back into running and I find that running for four to five miles is exhausting and I can barely maintain a 9 minute mile. 6 weeks ago I could jump on the treadmill and push myself for a couple miles in under 14:10. I'm not even sure I could maintain 2 miles for 16 minutes at this point.
My question is, would somebody who put on 5 or 6 lb in a few months, yes I ate like a pig, see this kind of decline in performance so quickly? Interestingly enough I ran my 10K PR with some of that extra weight on me already. Or is it possible that I'm just exhausted? That 10K was about five or six weeks ago and 1/2 Marathon a little over a month now.
The other issue I seem to be noticing is more difficulty breathing now. My iron levels are fine but I'm wondering if I've got some silent acid reflux. I have a tendency to go out for a run after having a cup of coffee in the morning because I work a full-time job and that's the only time I can go.
I will take any suggestions!
