Just ran a 4:54 pr, last year I ran 4:56 and 10:38 for 1600+3200 but I had an underwhelming xc season running high 16:50s for 3 miles.
I’m 4 weeks into my indoor base (building up to 60 mpw and in the mid 40s so far) and I ran my 4:54 at a time trial with some other fellas that inspired some confidence. Is 4:40 a realistic goal or is it too easy/hard? What would be comparable 800+3200 goals?
I believe it is possible. It will definitely take quite a bit of effort and probably even a bit of luck. It would definitely be a lofty goal but I do believe it is doable though.
Given your other PRs it seems that you’re about at an even fitness level for each of the events. Your xc times might be a bit better than track but it’s close either way. Based on my prior experiences I’d say the average 16:50 3 miler should be able to go sub 4:45 at some point in the track season. If you’re looking to hit under 4:40 for the indoor season it will definitely take some extra work. I would recommend speed work and some more mile pace workouts. Ex. 5x400m @ 70sec w 75sec rest.
That being said if your coach already has training laid out for you then definitely follow what he says instead of listening to some 19 y/o kid on letsrun.
As for comparable 800m and 3200m goals I’d say:

No. 2:08 / 4:40 is way faster than 10:20. I ran 4:50 / 10:20 as a frosh in equivalent efforts. As a soph I ran 4:38 / 9:50.
I would say that 2:08 / 4:40 / 10:04 are about equivalent. Most people don't have equal ability at all three, but those times are equivalent. I find the Purdy tables to be the most accurate. Nearly all the other ones I find to be off.
Bottom line is that nobody really knows. I laugh when I read the posts above mine. If everyone had the same progression or there was a formula that worked for EVERYONE that said run an 8 in this equals a 32 in this.... it doesn't exist.
Just train your butt off, eat hot dogs, and run your best. Whatever happens happens.
Thanks for replies-I agree with this point, partial reason for posting was that I wasn’t sure what realistic goals might be but I’m feeling pretty confident and I’ll just keep putting in the miles and cranking out the workouts.
