Daniels talked about Cruise Intervals decades ago. I don’t know about other folks, but whenever I assigned daniels’s Cruise Intervals, my kids always ended up running them at CV pace

I think the newish twist that Tinman introduced is the combination of training types to make his own special mix.

He didn't say it was new, he said it is a buzzword. And he's right. Using a bunch of stupid terms just makes a ridiculously simple sport needlessly complicated.

I'm convinced runners use these buzzwords just to make themselves feel smart when discussing the world's simplest sport.

"Critical velocity" is a really stupid term. We already had accepted definitions for various speeds and he had to go and create a new name.

Why velocity? I never see anybody specify a direction, so shouldn't it just be speed?

I agree. We have no way of knowing our oxygen uptake, we only guess based on how we feel and how we feel is way more important than following some numbers. For example on a hot or cold day, your oxygen consumption percentage goes way down.

Bump. This hobbyjogger buzzword is still going strong. Tinman should capitalize on a hobbyjogger-oriented book ASAP.

this thread is why I like my style of training.........use words like fresh, good, buildup. THey are easy to understand

in most discussions of running, the assumption is that the athlete is running forwards.

and, for further reference, the term of art on LetsRun is "leg speed velocity," which covers most running situations.

Not sure about CV, but MaxVO2 is a definable pace: the minimum speed at which your are using the maximum volume of oxygen.

I also like the term "Anaerobic Threshold" rather than tempo or CV. I think it better defines the target better. It's the point at which the body starts to increase the anaerobic pathway rate in the body.

My runs are classified as easy, AT, VO2. I also do mile race pace stuff and speed work which are faster.

Nothing new under the sun.

In the 60's it was interval training. Lots of hard running, every day, every rep, run till you puke, then run more reps.

In the 70's it was LSD and aerobic development.

In the 80's it was "train smart". So big mileage was pushed aside. (US running hit an all time low internationally by the turn of the decade.)

In the 90's it was V02max/threshold. Daniels and his formula where you were doing reps, but you weren't going all out like the reps people did in the 60's.

In the 00's it was a synergy of 90's threshold+ 70's LSD. Mileage came back BIG as people realized that it wasn't one or the other- to run well you need both. You need miles on your legs, you need an aerobic base, you need endurance BUT you also need to hit it hard. (The US came roaring back where it's now every competitive, and HS talent has re-emerged

Tinman is pretentious. He says he uses calculus to work out training paces. Is that the most pretentious thing you ever heard from a coach? I say yes.

If everyone followed your advice, no one would read your thread because the subject matter mentions CV and VO2.

It worked for you though.
