This is for highly cushioned shoes. The shoes in between, I believe, are the way to go, Make sure you got an inflexible sole and good protection from the ground.

The problem isn't with soft surfaces. The problem, and I got this from Robbins, is that the more cushion you put under your feet the more you block your feet's ability to understand what surface they're moving over and to adapt to whatever the surface is. Add a lot of cushion underfoot and you'll unconsciously strike the ground harder so that your feet can tell what's there.
